Getting Excited About A Tankless Water Heater
Ok, I admit it, home utility appliances are not very exciting at their core. Its hard to get worked up and fall in love with a piece of equipment that you don’t see or touch everyday. But I’d like to explain why there are definite reasons to get more excited about a tankless water heater than you would first expect.
1. Saving Money Long Term. If this doesn’t excite you then I need to know what you do for a living. The basic function of a water heater is to heat the water in your home for use by your hot water actions (such as baths, washing clothes, etc). But with a regular water heater you are heating more water than you need and needing to keep it hot longer. This translates into higher energy costs, whether electric or gas, in order to keep that water hot until you need it again. A tankless water heater works by heating the water on demand and keeping your energy costs down. It heats the water as it passes through the appliance, so you aren’t constantly keeping it hot when not in need. That alone could save you hundreds of dollars each year depending on the cost of energy in your home. I’ve seen statements online of users saving a third to half on their energy bills. That’s pretty impressive to me.
2. Saving Money Up Front. Most people see that buying this unit costs more than a standard water heater. But don’t forget that the government often gives energy saving tax rebates when you purchase and install these kinds of appliances. Many times $300 comes back to you, which can be a real boost to the bottom line.
3. Saving Space. For those living in tight quarters or having tights spaces in which to cram their appliances this can be a real headache saver. Standard water heaters are bulky, heavy and often require more than one person to install just because of their girth. Since most people keep these units in their basements there can often be issues with turning tight corners and low ceilings. With a tankless water heater they can be mounted to walls and are so compact and easy to carry the installation is often a snap with only one person involved.
Hopefully this article can alleviate any concerns you have about whether a tankless water heater is worth the investment. I definitely think it is and hope you will continue your research armed with valuable information.
