Carriage House Garage Doors - The Look Without The Cost

Gaining in popularity is the carriage-house look in garage doors. If you are not familiar with this new up scaling of the garage door you may find the idea strange. But take a drive around some of the up scale neighborhoods and ‘pay attention’ to those garage doors. Look at the plain unadorned ones and then look at a few of the up scaled ones. Perhaps they have strap hinges, decorative handles, clavos nails or period hardware to compliment the house. Now go back and drive past the houses with the plain garage doors and use a little imagination. Would they upgrade the house with a little extra attention to detail? What would a little extra attention to detail do to ‘your’ garage door?

Well, let’s start with cost. You can dress up a plain two-car garage door for under $300. Or you can replace the door or doors for anything from $700 to the sky’s the limit ($30,000 or more). But keep in mind the goal. You want you home to have the same appeal as those houses you drove past without upstaging you house. What good is that? Then you’d have some major remodeling to do to. You don’t want that. Be realistic. Visit your local decorative hardware showroom or garage door manufacturer. I suggest these over your standard lumberyard/hardware store because the decorative hardware store and the garage door manufacturer will be better equipped to walk you through the process, they will offer many more options than the big warehouse stores and they know what they are talking about. Your cost may be a little more but the look will be stunningly different than the big box warehouse store could offer.

Next consider the value added to your home. For far less than adding an addition, or upgrading a bathroom you have added value to your home. Its street appeal has risen greatly and after all - that’s what people see first.

Be innovative. Be smart. Upgrade the largest (and dullest) part of the exterior of your home.
