Basement Insulation
Most basements are damp and musty, so therefore if you’re turning it into proper living quarters it is important that your basement insulation is done properly. This can be accomplished with the standard insulation and a vapor barrier, but because basements are noted for being damp you have to take care that this is done properly. When you start your project, install your inside walls with 2×4 and place your insulation between the studs. After you finish this, run a vapor barrier over the studs so that every thing is sealed off. This will take care of any moisture that may cause mold or mildew. This is very important but there are other steps that take just as much care.
Your construction process should go smoothly if you take care of the water problems in your basement first. This means checking walls and floors. If you do have windows in your basement then you should check to make sure the frames are sealed properly. Now is the time to replace any major items such as main stream units or your electrical service. Then you can install any drainage for toilets or sinks if you are going to install them. You may have to run these drains under the concrete floor. Next install any extra electrical outlets you may need and cable or telephone wire.
If you are thinking of installing a fireplace then you need to do this at this point in the remodeling. This is the time for you to install the hearth and the flue. If you want a wood burning stove, then you should also install that now so you know how far it will protrude from the wall. You can also install any ductwork for the ventilation if you require it. If you are putting in a bathroom then you should also install all your fixtures at this point.
